In 2020, I embarked on an exciting new career in real estate. I was excited, scared, but most of all - eager and hungry to build a successful business for myself and my family! Reflecting on my past four years in this industry, I wanted to share three impactful learnings that have transformed my business and my mindset that may be helpful to other Realtors.
GET INVOLVED
When we are fresh, new agents, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not know where to start. One thing I wish I had done sooner was to get involved with Greater Nashville REALTORS®, my local association. This could mean volunteering for a committee or participating in networking events like the Young Professionals Network (which is for Realtors who are less than seven years in the business, it has nothing to do with age). One thing you can do is consider Leadership Academy: an eye-opening program that deep dives into the Greater Nashville REALTORS® organization and opportunities for overall growth. I just completed it and it was immensely helpful for my personal and professional growth.
DON'T COMPARE
As they say, comparison is the thief of joy. It is so easy in this business to compare yourself to others. The truth is, no one will ever have your unique perspective or approach to this business and that is what will set you apart in a sea of Realtors. If you focus on yourself, your business and the clients you want to attract, you will attract the right people for YOU. It will feel more natural and enjoyable to work with these clients.
NETWORK
Networking isn’t only about finding clients but also about finding referral partners. Clients will follow. These partners can be just about anyone. People who touch our industry are a great place to start because we work together so often! Think lenders, insurance agents/brokers, or the guy who installed your window treatments (yes - true story - I befriended my window covering sales rep). If you are impressed by the way someone runs their business, invite them to coffee and learn more. You never know when a future client of yours is going to need a recommendation for window treatments, flooring, a financial planner, a life coach, etc.; the list is endless.
This goes for your fellow Realtor, too. There is so much we can learn from each other & share! Not to mention, it's nice to have a built-in roster of Realtor friends who you know you can trust; especially to help your client when you're out of town or need an open house host. Plus, you may get an opportunity to have business referred your way if your Realtor friends become too busy to manage their load on their own. So don't be shy - come say hi!
