Being A Volunteer Leader

Today is my last article as President of Greater Nashville Realtors for The Tennessean. 2018 has been a year filled with lessons and wonderful new experiences. As I shift from my role, I wanted to share a few observations from this year.

First, I’ve learned that we are all leaders. Leadership is not a role or title; it’s a series of actions. Without exception, every leader I admire sees leadership as an act of service. Their lives are modeled after the concept Winston Churchill shared, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life but what we give.”

Second: True leaders never quit learning. John F Kennedy said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” While we all have natural leadership roles, we may not see ourselves as leaders or take the time to improve our knowledge of how to consciously lead. The best leaders share the best of who they are, while consistently learning and growing.

Third: Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. As citizens, we vote on a regular basis, but by volunteering and getting involved, we vote every day about the kind of community we want to have. Democracy comes with the reality that not every decision is going to go our way. A wise leader adjusts the course when needed and trusts the group to make the right choice.

Fourth: from Jack Welch: “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” It is up to us, as citizens and community members, to encourage the future generation and to support those striving to overcome challenges. There are many ways to do this, and it can be as simple as showing kindness to the homeless or mentoring/tutoring a student. Our community is overflowing with opportunities to give and serve, and we have some fantastic nonprofit organizations who could use your time, knowledge or funds.

It has been a true honor to represent Realtors and share my passion for real estate with the Greater Nashville area this year. It is truly my hope that you have a wonderful 2019. Onward!
