How does the process work each year?
Step 1.
The board application is announced and opened each year during the month of July. We accomplished this through member emails, social media posts and posting on our website. All REALTOR® members of Greater Nashville REALTORS® are eligible to apply.
Members submit an application by completing an application form. The application form asks for:
Members submitting an application must also submit a signature page with signatures from 10 Greater Nashville REALTORS® members who support their application. One signatory must be the potential nominee's managing broker, unless the nominee is the managing broker.
Informational Meeting:
The association hosts a meeting in July for any member that is interested in learning more about what it means to serve on the board of directors and how the process works. This meeting date and time is provided along with the nomination announcements.
Step 2.
Once the application submission deadline has passed, the Nominating Committee schedules interviews with each applicant. These interviews typically occur in early August.
The Nominating Committee consists of the five immediate past presidents of Greater Nashville REALTORS®, the current president of Greater Nashville REALTORS® and the current president-elect of Greater Nashville REALTORS®. The most immediate past-president serves as the Nominating Committee chair. The makeup of the Nominating Committee is detailed in our bylaws.
The interview consists of questions that allow the Nominating Committee to learn more about each candidate, their experience as a REALTOR®, their experience participating in association activities, their interest in serving as an association board member and their knowledge of the association and challenges facing the industry.
Step 3.
The Nominating Committee takes into account the information submitted in the nominee’s application, the information gathered from the interview process and the leadership and diversity needs across the association as they select the slate of six candidates.
Our association bylaws specifically direct the nominating committee to provide a slate of six candidates to the membership. The bylaws also say that the four members obtaining the highest number of total votes are elected as new board members for a three-year term.
Step 4.
The slate of six candidates are reported to the current board of directors no later than the September board meeting. Ballots are prepared thereafter and the election is announced to the full membership. Our bylaws spell out deadline dates for all these activities. The voting generally begins in mid-September and ends in early October.
The slate of six is announced to the membership through member emails, social media posts and posting on our website. The association uses an online third-party voting platform to ensure members can only vote once and the vote is secure.
Step 5.
Once the deadline for voting comes, the voting platform is disabled and the association CEO reports the voting results to the Nominating Committee Chair. The chair then contacts each member on the slate of six candidates with the results. Once all members of the slate of six are aware of the results, an all-member email is sent to Greater Nashville REALTORS® members with the results.
The four members receiving the most votes begin their three-year term on January 1 of the upcoming year.
