Our Story

Greater Nashville REALTORS®’ history dates back to 1891. First known as the Nashville Real Estate Exchange, it became the Nashville Real Estate Board in 1907 and then in 1967 the association was named the Nashville Board of REALTORS®. In 1996 the name was changed to the Greater Nashville Association of REALTORS® (GNAR) and most recently in 2016 the Greater Nashville REALTORS® brand was established.

When the association started, there was no Tennessee or National Association of REALTORS®. As a matter of fact, the first attempt to create a national association of real estate boards was right here in Nashville, Tennessee in 1892. The attempt did not succeed, due in part to a national recession in 1893. What is now known as the National Association of REALTORS® was formed in 1908 in Chicago, Illinois. Nashville has been affiliated with the National Association of REALTORS® since 1911 – more than 100 years ago!

The organization’s mission has remained consistent however over the 128-year history by providing real estate professionals a structured organization that works toward uniting members to exert a beneficial influence on the profession and to promote and maintain high standards of professional conduct.

The four fundamental services provided by the association at its beginning remain the fundamental services it provides today, including:

1.   Education and Professional Development Opportunities.

2.   Legislative involvement at the local, regional, state and national levels.

3.   REALTOR® Code of Ethics and arbitration dispute resolution for members and those they serve.

4.   Communication and Networking with the public, to highlight market data and the importance of property ownership and the value of using a REALTOR®; and with members, to keep them informed of opportunities for involvement, networking and growth.

The association's archives, housed at the Nashville Library, chronicle a history of association members being involved in a variety of community, political and social issues, as well as providing excellent professional services to clients and customers using their expertise.

Today, the Greater Nashville REALTORS® provides members with prestige and professionalism through a long-standing institution and the largest local real estate association in Tennessee.

REALTOR® is a federally registered collective membership mark, which identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics. NAR members receive their membership through a local association like Greater Nashville REALTORS®. REALTORS® are set apart from real estate agents by their subscription to the Code of Ethics that guides the business decisions of 1.3 million REALTORS® today. The REALTOR® Code of Ethics isn’t just words on a page, but is a pledge of honesty, integrity, professionalism, and community service. Partnering with a REALTOR® delivers the peace of mind that comes from working with a real person. A real advocate. A real, trusted professional who is committed to their clients’ futures and neighborhoods just as much as they are.
