Last week our nation paused to observe Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices and contributions made by veterans to protect the freedoms we cherish and to recognize the ongoing impact they have on our communities.
At the age of 18, I enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on active duty for four years before transitioning to the Reserves while attending the University of San Diego – later completing my degree at Belmont University here in Nashville.
My time in the Navy was transformative. I learned a lifetime of lessons that continue to guide me in my professional life as a Realtor and community leader. The Navy instilled in me a sense of discipline and duty that is rooted in integrity, adaptability, and a determination to see every mission through to completion. These qualities are not only essential in military service but have also proven invaluable in navigating the complex and often unpredictable world of real estate and association leadership.
Leadership experience is not all that I gained by serving in the armed forces. As a veteran, homeownership is often more attainable and affordable through the VA loan product. A residential VA loan offers significant benefits to eligible veterans, active-duty service members, and certain members of the National Guard and Reserves. One key advantage is the option for a 0% down payment, reducing the upfront financial burden. Additionally, VA loans do not require private mortgage insurance (PMI), which can result in substantial monthly savings compared to conventional loans. Despite these perks, only 30% of veterans are aware of their eligibility for this product, according to the 2024 Buyer and Seller Profile by the National Association of Realtors. Raising awareness can empower more veterans to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to achieve their homeownership goals.
To my fellow veterans, thank you for your service and for the positive impact you continue to make. Your experiences and dedication enrich every corner of our nation, including the housing market and the neighborhoods we proudly call home.
